In general, no one type of greenhouse has better efficiency for crop production. Although each type has advantages for a particular application, there is no one type that is always the best. There are various types of greenhouses to suit different needs.

Popular Types of Greenhouse:

Shape and style can be used to classify greenhouses. The factor that can be considered for classification is the uniqueness of the cross-section of greenhouses.   • Lean-to Type Shape of Greenhouse

A greenhouse is placed next to an existing building in a lean-to design. An existing structure is used for one or more of the building’s sides. This is usually attached to a house, but it can be attached to other buildings as well. 

Using appropriate greenhouse covering materials, the roof of the building is extended, and the enclosed area is properly insulated. It usually faced the south side. A lean-to-type greenhouse can be close to energy sources, such as electricity, water, and heat. This structure is not much expensive.   • Even Span Type Shape Greenhouse

Even-span structures have two slopes of equal pitch and width; the two roof slopes are standard and full-size. A small size design is used for the greenhouse and is built on level ground. At one end, it has a gable roof attachment to the house. 

The plant benches can be arranged in two or three rows in this structure. It is more costly than a lean-to-type structure, but it has greater flexibility in design and can be provided to more plants. Even span is exposed to more heat as the size is greater along with the exposed glass area. Thus, the type of greenhouse has become popular in society.

Advantages of This Greenhouse:

To maintain uniform temperatures during the winter heating season, the shape of the design is better than a lean-to type. Although the structure is very similar to a heated building, a separate heating system is required. Two side benches, two pathways, and a broad center bench will be included.

  • Right and Furrow Size Greenhouse:

Two or more A-frame greenhouses are joined along the length of the eave in this style of design. Rain and melted snow are carried away by the eave, which acts as a furrow or gutter. Between the greenhouses, a sidewall is removed, resulting in a structure with a single huge interior. 

Interior space consolidation decreases labor, lowers automation costs, enhances personal management, and lowers fuel consumption because there is less exposed wall surface through which heat escapes.

Snow loads must be factored into the frame specifications of these greenhouses since snow does not fall off the roofs as it does in individual free-standing greenhouses but rather melts. Ridge and furrow greenhouses are widely utilized in northern Europe and Canada, despite the presence of snow, and are well suited to Indian conditions.
