How does it work?
The very first step is setting the temperature of the air conditioner through the thermostat. Once you have done that, a motorized fan which is placed in the unit outside the home draws in the hot air through the ducts. During this time, the refrigerant is pumped through the external compressor which is there on the furnace. When the hot air enters the unit, the refrigerant turns the air cool. This cool air is then circulated throughout the house through the furnace blower. During the process the refrigerant which made the hot air cool becomes warm. This refrigerant is then sent to an external condenser to release the heat. The continuation of this cycle of the central AC unit helps to make the house cool.
What are the different types?
There are two different types of central air conditioning systems.
- Packaged Air Conditioning: This unit combines the compressor, evaporator, condenser and coil into one. This is then installed outside the home. The warm air which travels through the duct enters this unit to be cooled. Once the air has cooled it is sent back inside the house.
- Split Central Air conditioning: It is the modern central air conditioning system. This type of AC separates the components of the air conditioners. The components are the evaporator and the compressor. The evaporator is placed outside the house. Whereas, the compressor is situated inside. This central air conditioning system works by using the refrigerant piping in the evaporator coil. This helps to make the warm air cooler.
What are the different sizes?
The central air conditioning system is available in various sizes. The size of the system is estimated by its capacity to cool. The area which is cooled by the system determines its capacity. Hence, the size is measured in tonnage and in British Thermal Units (BTUs) per hour. The size ranges from 1 to 5-ton ACs which can be used between 12000 and 60,000 BTUs. The size of the air conditioning system is determined by the size of the home. Which means that it is dependent on square footage. If you have a small house, you will require a smaller unit. Getting a larger unit for a small home means paying heft energy bills.
